Attentive wide-field sensing for visual telepresence and surveillance ?

چکیده
Physical and computational constraints limit the spatial resolution and field-ofview (FOV) achievable in any single sensor. In the human eye, a compromise has evolved in which resolution is high near the optical axis, falling off with eccentricity. The success of this design depends upon visual mechanisms for rapidly detecting interesting events in the periphery and motor mechanisms for accurately redirecting the fovea to peripheral targets for more detailed analysis. Prototype artificial visual systems based conceptually on these principles are being developed in our laboratory. We partition visual sensing into two components. A pre-attentive component provides a large, fixed FOV at low resolution, allowing detection of events of interest over an entire visual environment. An attentive component provides a much smaller, shiftable FOV at high resolution, designed to recognize and interpret events detected by the pre-attentive system. These prototype sensors serve as useful testbeds for computational models of visual attention, and may lead to new telepresence and surveillance technologies.

Pre-Attentive Face Detection for Foveated Wide-Field Surveillance
Conventional surveillance sensors suffer from an unavoidable tradeoff between image resolution and field of view. This problem may be overcome by combining a fixed, preattentive, low-resolution wide-field camera with a shiftable, attentive, high-resolution narrow-field camera. Here we present techniques for orienting the attentive camera to faces detected in the pre-attentive wide-field image s...
متن کاملOmnidirectional Sensing and Its Applications
The goal of this paper is to present a critical survey of existing literature on an omnidirectional sensing. The area of vision application such as autonomous robot navigation, telepresence and virtual reality is expanding by use of a camera with a wide angle of view. In particular, a real-time omnidirectional camera with a single center of projection is suitable for analyzing and monitoring, b...
متن کاملUbiquitous Telepresence
This paper describes a technology vision for the future that I call ubiquitous telepresence. The main idea of ubiquitous telepresence is to allow users to project their physical presence anywhere on the internet. Speciically, users are given the ability to explore and interact with many remote physical environments (e.g., all sites on the internet) through remote sensing and manipulation device...
متن کاملRemote sensing technology for mapping and monitoring vegetation cover (Case study: Semirom-Isfahan, Iran)
To determine the suitable indices for vegetation cover and production assessment based on the remote sensing data, simultaneous digital data with field data belonging to the spring rangeland of the Semirom-Isfahan province were analyzed. During two years of monitoring the annual, grass, forb, and shrub vegetation cover and the total production data from 86 were collected. The Global Positioning...
